RPI - Tour de Troy

On the late Friday evening of March 25th the Spring Break group met up with another group of Dartmouth cyclists at a Motel close to Troy, NY where RPI was hosting a weekend of great, though very cold racing.

The weekend began with an ITT along the Hudson River. Cold morning air made the suffering in the saddle many times worse than you would otherwise expect from the muscle tearing show of strength and endurance that makes up the ITT. In spite of the chilliness Dartmouth riders managed to get a 1st and 5th in the men's D race.

As the sun rose over the racing ground it warmed frozen legs and heated up the race a notch as it proceeded to a 7.5 mile circuit race consisting of turning descends and a 150 foot climb before the finish line with enough % to tire even the strongest riders. The race was loaded with exciting breakaways, crashes and sprints, some involving Dartmouth riders. Will Boylston fought brave and alone in the lead of men's B trying to cover a breakaway, that unfortunately contained too many MIT riders, and he finished 8th. Rosalie Lipfert in women's B was very successful in her circuit race finishing 2nd, only four seconds after...once again...MIT.

The best Dartmouth teamwork of the weekend was to be found in men's D where Nicholas Weimer, Joshua Hall and Daniel Holmdahl managed to launch a Big-Green cruise missile on the third and final lap that led to a 1st and 3rd for Dartmouth. Despite Weimer being dragged into a crash on the first lap, falling half a mile behind the pack, he managed to pedal himself all the way up to the the pack where Hall and Holmdahl were happy to see him fit for fight. On the first turn of the final lap the three riders zoomed past the entire pack encouraging the others to initiate a futile hunt for the Big Green.

Sunday offered the seasons most interesting criterium so far. What was promised to be a nine-corner crit was decreased to a seven-corner crit, but it was nonetheless exciting. Riding on the streets of downtown Troy was a spectacular feeling when either chasing or being chased by a pack of victory-thirsty collegiate racers. Will Boylston did, once again, some hard work for Dartmouth in men's B supported by his teammates Anthony Paravati, Zach Parker and Isaiah Berg. After many, many laps around the same course it came down to a sprint in which Boylston finished 2nd after having done the lion's share of the work in the lead group. Berg unfortunately had some mechanical problems that forced him to quit the race after a crash that also involved Parker, but from which the latter was able to continue racing, though with his bib-shorts ripped open on the side and gory bruises on his thigh reflecting nothing but the robustness of this very strong rider.
